Dear James,

The signatures on the Ma1ay ten cent note are those
of men of "D" Company 2/19th battalion.

The 2/19th battalion arrived at H.M.S. Se1eta, the Singapore Naval
Base on 18th March 1941 on H.M.T. "Queen Mary", and were immediately
entrained to 200 miles "up country" to Seremban, the capital of the
State of Negri Sembi1an, arriving there on the 19th March.

We were billeted in King George V schoo1unti1 23 March 1941, when we
were shifted to Port Dickson , on the west coast.

We stayd here until 25th June '41, when we were shifted back to Seremban,
but this time billeted in St. Pau1s Institute.

I can;t remember when we signed this note, but it would be reasonable
to assume that it was while we were in St. Pau1s Institute because
it was here that the picture was taken on 2-8-1941. At that time we
were all "sign happy".

In the picture you will find almost all the men who signed the note.
Of those of us who are still alive you will find George Mann and myself
but not A1an Brideoak who was away on other duties in Singapore.

Tony Tonacia is still alive. I think he would be a bit younger than
therest of us. I am 91 1/2, Bill baird is 95 and still runs a mail run
in out-back N.S.W. Also Lieutenant John Var1ey M.C. is still alive
and Sergeant Bert Dona1dson just died only a fortnight ago.

But I doubt that any of the others are, because so many of them were
killed in action at the battle of Muar.

I hope this will assist you in the "mystery" of the now historic
ten cent Ma1ay note
